USM undertook a study on how to bring life to this former Wholesale Fish Market site in the Northern Quarter, then an up and coming edge of city location. The building was just a set of walls with no roof, in an area that was a large car park. We suggested a series of specialist market activities based around a mixed use refurbishment scheme.
Project dates | 1996 |
Client | Manchester City Council & The Northern Quarter Association |
Brief | Wholesale Market, Listed - largely demolished building. Re-use study, market activity |
Partnerships | Manchester City Council, URBED, Ian Simpson Architects, Wheeling Horton & Toms and lan Baxter Associates |
Results | The report came out just after the bomb explosion that devastated much of the town centre. This allowed MCC to review the town centre development in a new light and on this site they had a developer competition which was won by ICIAN who created a largely residential scheme with a mix of commercial including a public square where markets and events take place. |
